Wonderopolis

One website that I've recently become obsessed with is Wonderopolis. This website posts a new "wonder" each day. I've already made plans to replace my daily "Do Now" journal entree with one of these wonders at least once a week. Although some are rather silly, such as "Do Rabbits Have Good Eyesight?", others really get kids thinking! When you click on the wonder, you come to a page with information regarding the wonder, suggestions of projects you can implement, and even wonder words! Wonder words are words related to the subject at hand; so for the rabbit wonder, words include eyesight, vitamin, essential, pigment, balanced, placement, predator. These words could even serve as vocabulary words for the day. One other aspect of this site that I love is that other classrooms post on the wonder as well. Through this feature, you can see what other classrooms are doing associated to the wonder. I HIGHLY recommend you all check it out!

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Jamee. I looked through it, it looks interesting! I'm wondering if I can use this with my ELL students. It would be a good way to get them thinking and try to explain their reasoning in English. It also introduces new vocabulary.

  3. This seems really neat. It would be fun to have your students come up with their own wonders, do some research and pick out the vocabulary words they think are pertinent to the subject.

  4. Thanks for sharing this site. I spent some time reviewing it and there are tools here which could be used at the secondary level. THis would be a great way to open a class and grab students' attention.

  6. What an interesting idea for a site. I like that you are planning on implementing this with your students in a journal so they can have time to think about their responses before sharing them with their peers. I looked around Wonderopolis a little and saw some classes respond to the wonders, it would be really neat if you and your kids wrote in to the site!
